System impact study: the reliability analysis behind an interconnection
The engineering analysis that identifies what a proposed generator does to power flows, voltage, stability and short circuit duty, and what reinforcement is therefore required.
A system impact study is the reliability analysis that determines what a proposed interconnection does to the transmission system. It models the project in the base case and tests the network for thermal overloads, voltage problems, short circuit duty above equipment ratings, and stability concerns, applying the criteria set out in the transmission provider''s tariff and study manuals.
The study output is a list of network upgrades required to accommodate the request at the service level sought, together with cost estimates for those upgrades. Under a cluster study process, the analysis is performed for the cluster as a whole and the results are apportioned among its members.
The system impact study sits between the initial screening of a request and the facilities study, which engineers and prices the interconnection facilities themselves. A developer reading a system impact study report is reading an estimate produced under stated assumptions, not a construction contract; the figures are refined at the facilities study stage and fixed in the interconnection agreement.

- What does a system impact study actually test?
- Steady-state power flow, short circuit duty, and stability, at minimum, under the conditions specified in the transmission provider's study criteria. The output is a list of constraints the project would create or worsen and the upgrades that would relieve them.
- Is the study binding?
- No. It identifies required upgrades and estimates cost. Binding obligations arise in the interconnection agreement executed after the facilities study.
